Our troubled world and chaotic lives force us to consider what happened to God’s good creation. How could something created so good become so chaotic again? And why do we find it so challenging to live out God’s good purpose for our lives? In Genesis 3 we find out what went so terribly wrong so we can make sense of chaotic life as it is today.

On the sixth day, “God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Gen 1:27). This fascinating passage, which is arguably the highlight of Genesis 1, is unpacked in the dirt and details of Genesis 2:4-25. In this text we see a picture-perfect garden: a picture of peace. It is very good. As the scene unfolds, we gain additional insight into the origin and purpose of humanity. And as descendants from that ancient order…we learn something about ourselves as well.

Standing in stark relief to the chaos of our lives–unstable jobs, broken relationships, untrustworthy leaders–is the God who claims to bring order to the earth, to make something good out of the mess in which we find ourselves. It stretches our imaginations that such a God exists and that he can make good on his promises. Today’s passages from Genesis 1:1-2:3 introduces us to just such a God, a God in whom we can have confidence to bring order from the chaos. – Gen. 1:1–2:3
